Safety Management

During the past 10 years there have been over 376,000 fatal crashes in the USA and over 25,000 fatal crashes in Canada, which is the equivalent to having a September 11th attack occurring every month. According to the U.S. Department of
Transportation motor vehicle traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for persons aged 5 to 27.
In 2001, iTRANS Consulting was tasked by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) to develop guidelines for a coordinated, |
comprehensive management approach to integrating engineering, education, and enforcement efforts that more effectively address major crash problems and are likely to result in a greater reduction of overall injuries and death.
In response, iTRANS Consulting, developed the Integrated Safety Management Process which was published as NCHRP Report 501. This report describes in detail a step-by-step guide to developing a strategic highway safety plan with a model organizational structure specifying functions and responsibilities. The report includes data driven examples showing goal setting, emphasis area selection (areas of safety concern such roadway departure or intersection crashes), and optimization of strategies across emphasis areas.

Today, the recent federal legislation Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), requries States to develop a strategic highway safety plan in order to obligate funds for Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) activities.
iTRANS staff have provided facilitation, leadership, data analysis, network screening, safety strategies, and evaluation that form part of a strategic highway safety plan in both the USA and Canada. Instead of one-size fits all approach, iTRANS Consulting has custom tailored strategic plans to best fit the needs and requirement of the State, regional municipality, or city. |
