Network Screen
By definition, a traffic safety network screening methodology is one which produces a list of sites with promise, priority ranked locations where improvements can result in a substantial crash reduction. Our philosophy towards network screening is to provide reliable, quality-checked results using state-of-art methodologies and that bring direct benefits and applicability for road safety practitioners.

At iTRANS we apply the Empirical Bayes methodology by first developing a Safety Performance Function. A Safety Performance Function is simply a mathematical equation which describes the relationship between crashes and traffic volume. So in the |
figure, the equation which describes the shape of the surface showing the relationship between crashes and the entering Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) on the major and minor road segments at an intersection, is a Safety Performance Function. Historical crash data can then be combined with the Safety Performance Function to produce an expected number of collisions at all locations within a traffic network.
Applying a advanced network screening methodology allows a jurisdiction to be proactive in terms of addressing safety problems before compliant are received, and cost-effective because funds are applied where they may reduce the greatest number of crashes. In the USA, the federal legislation Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), now requires States to advance their capabilities for traffic safety analysis.
