iTRANS has a reputable public transit consulting practice, with a tradition of innovative solutions in all areas of public transportation, including higher order transit, service planning, specialized transit, and transit technologies. Services offered in these areas include service reviews and designs, corridor studies, feasibility studies, policy development, strategic and business plans, surveys and analysis, ridership forecasting, fare strategies, functional facility designs (e.g. terminals, park-and-ride), transit priority measures, fleet plans, operational and organizational reviews, performance analyses, marketing and communication strategies, accessibility plans, transportation demand management, and public consultation.

Higher-Order Transit

Our services in this area cover those types of transit services and facilities considered to be at a higher or more advanced level than conventional bus transit. Prime amongst these is Bus-Rapid-Transit, which is being actively planned and implemented in many large and mid-sized urban areas across Canada and elsewhere. Higher-Order Transit consulting services offered by iTRANS include transit corridor studies, feasibility studies, property protection, ridership forecasting, conceptual designs, detailed service designs, technology assessments and functional design of terminals, stations, commuter parking, fare collection and passenger amenities.

Transit Service Planning

iTRANS staff have carried out numerous transit service reviews in all parts of Canada. Recent projects have included several Ridership Growth Plans and Asset Management Plans for Ontario transit systems in support of the provincial gas tax revenue sharing program. Our planning projects have included setting targets and standards, identifying supportive policies (e.g. land use), performance assessments, detailed service designs, accessibility policies, fare strategies, fleet plans, technology improvements and financial plans. They also included a high level of public and stakeholder consultation.

Specialized Transit

iTRANS also provides planning services for specialized transit systems, not only for those serving people with disabilities but also community bus, rural transit and alternative service delivery strategies (e.g. dial-a-ride). These services include organizational reviews, operational audits, performance reviews and feasibility studies for new services.

Transit Technology

iTRANS senior professionals have considerable experience with the latest transit technologies, including fare collection (especially "smart-card" systems), automated vehicle location, real-time passenger information and vehicle travel time and delay profiles (using our own iTREC® GPS-based vehicle tracking technology). Services offered include feasibility studies, business case analysis for new technologies, specification development and assistance with procurement and implementation.
